On November 11th and 12th over 100 Iowa artists, musicians, and poets will gather in Perry’s downtown Cultural and Historic District to celebrate the arts with the eighth annual Art on the Prairie. This nonprofit juried arts festival is a collaboration of creativity that layers art, music, and words from a foundation of small town community spirit and ingenuity. It is free to the public and facilitated by a dedicated volunteer team. Art on the Prairie is located in eight buildings, each brimming with culture and all within walking distance in downtown Perry. All participants are from Iowa and display a wealth of different talents and wares: • Artists of a variety of media: pottery, painting, sculpture, jewelry, photography, fiber arts, letterpress, glass, wood, folk art, and more • The musical talents of 30 musicians, filling our venues with live acoustic unplugged music for the two-day festival • The Poet’s Corner, located in the lower level of the Hotel Pattee in the Nicolette Room, offering poetry readings by Iowa poets Located at the hub of Perry’s Arts District on Warford Street is La Poste, the former 1914 post office, now restored as a cultural arts and event center, www.laposteperry.com. Experience art and music in the upstairs gallery as you enjoy a hot beverage and freshly baked cookies. In the Cellar of La Poste, find featured artist Paul Micich, www.worldportband.com, who tells stories without words through his art and music. In addition to bringing paintings from his new gallery series, Paper Airplane, and from the book, The Littlest Angel, Micich will perform his Emmy award-winning music from World Port’s six CD’s. While in the Cellar, experience La Poste’s Bloody Mary Bar. Find the Challenge Proof Press in the basement of Peterson Designs, where you will discover printmakers at work. This post-World War II proof press, which was donated to the Ladies of La Poste by Koch Brothers Corporation in Des Moines, now resides at Peterson Designs to serve as a teaching tool for printmaking workshops. Explore each of Art on the Prairie’s eight venues to find surprises around every corner. Watch art in action as artists throw pots, paint, spin yarn, weave, create letterpress prints, and fuse lamp work glass beads. Participate in the collaborative community mosaic art project or rock painting activities taking place at the Perry Public Library. Sample delectable treats in several of the venues and on the Festival Food Alley on Warford Street. Art on the Prairie commissioned John Brommel to create four sculptures on Willis Boulevard which will commemorate the historical development of Perry: the railway, agriculture, industry, and art. Join us at 5:30, Nov. 11 at Willis and 3rd St. for the lighting of the Iowa Girl sculpture. This newest public art sculpture on Willis Boulevard represents the role of art in Perry’s development and is dedicated to Roberta Ahmanson, who started an artistic renaissance in Perry. Perry is also having its annual Holiday Open House at downtown retailers the same weekend with treats and drawings. Stay overnight at the historic Hotel Pattee, www.hotelpattee.com, for both shopping and a memorable cultural adventure.
